A Letter to the Council: Update on Higher Education Small Area Plan

Councilors,

I’ve recently received a few inquiries from several Councilors regarding the status of the Higher Education Small Area Plan, so I thought it would be a good idea to provide everyone with an update.

As you can imagine, the Planning office is very busy right now preparing for the upcoming UDC effective date of November 19. This includes drafting new UDC application and procedures manuals and conducting staff training sessions. The final UDC is available for review on the Planning webpage. We’ve also updated the zoning maps to reflect the new UDC zone districts. Final UDC Code

As for the Higher Education Small Area Plan, I’ve assigned this project to Jenn Reed Moses. Jenn was the principle planner on the UDC and, as such, was very involved in the discussions surrounding university housing issues. Jenn is currently the lead planner on the UDC implementation and as she finishes up work on the UDC manuals and training sessions, she will start preliminary work on the Higher Education Small Area Plan. This planning process will be similar to our previous small area plans and most likely will include a stakeholder committee. We’ll provide you with additional information as we define that process in more detail in the coming months.

Please be aware that the Higher Education Small Area Plan will not officially kick-off until Jenn gets back from maternity leave, sometime in February. She’s due to deliver the second baby girl in the Planning office in mid-December (Christina Berglund, a Planner II who works in current planning, gave birth to baby Juliet on October 9)!
